With a bold name like Mack Daddy a lot of pressure is put on oneself to not only meet, but to exceed expectations. Callaway does not fail to deliver with its new for 2018 Callaway Mack Daddy 4 Wedges.
‘Groove-In-Groove’ Technology
The Mack Daddy 4’s use innovative “Groove-In-Groove” technology to promote even more spin and control than their predecessor’s the Mack Daddy 3’s.
So what is ‘Groove-In-Groove’ Technology you ask? In addition to the typical grooves on the club face there are several much smaller grooves in between each of them. The result is more spin and control for both approach distances, as well as, shorter finesse shots around the green.
Callaway created 2 different kinds of the ‘Groove-In-Groove’ Technology. They call them 20D Groove and 5D Groove. The 20D is featured on 52 Degree wedges and below for a more consistent spin on longer, fuller shots. The 5D Groove provides maximum spin on the higher lofted 54 Degree and up wedges.
Accuracy & Control
Mack Daddy 4 have set new standard in the control department. Callaway offers 4 different sole grinds. Depending on what kind of shot you are trying to execute, each has its own benefits.
- C-Grind: Easier to play shots with the club face open, shallow attack angles
- X-Grind: (New for 2018) Narrow, best for steep attack angles, soft conditions
- W-Grind: Moderate heel relief prevents digging (***RECOMMEND***)
- S-Grind: Moderate heel relief keeps leading edge low, promotes solid contact
In my opinion this many options are a bit much and a little overwhelming. If you are just a weekend warrior stick to the W-Grind or the S-Grind. Those soles are more traditional and much more versatile than the C-Grind and X-Grind. The latter two mentioned are for more advanced players and are not necessary in most cases.
Quality & Feel
The Mack Daddy 4’s are built with precise center of gravity points. The soft carbon steel club face gives you that crisp contact with the turf and the ball.
The shaft is made up of True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue Steel (S200 Stiff Flex). Callaway claims to have rigorously tested the club so they should stand up to most situations.
Options
Callaway offers a lot of options for the Mack Daddy 4 Wedges. Varieties of bounce, lofts, sole grinds, as well as, a ton of customization options for grips and shafts. Instead of going through them all I encourage you to check out Callaway for more details.
Style/ Performance Variations
The Mack Daddy 4’s are available in several different “styles” and finishes. The are all priced the same and give you even more options to fine tune your game. We broke it down here because it can be confusing on the Callway Site.
1. Mack Daddy 4 Chrome Wedges:
Classic Most Traditional Style Wedges (Pictured previously in article)
2. Mack Daddy 4 Raw Wedges:
Mack Daddy 4 Raw wedges are raw, meaning that the carbon steel is not plated. With time and use, your Raw wedges will rust; this is expected and will not affect the performance of the club.
3. Mack Daddy 4 Forged Chrome Wedges:
Signature Shaping and Tour Performance in a Forged Design. Callaway Mack Daddy Forged Chrome Wedges feature signature shaping and Tour performance in an ultra-premium forged design. These wedges were crafted by Roger Cleveland in collaboration with the best players in the world to help golfers of every skill level hit crisp, controlled shots that lead to lower scores.
4. Mack Daddy 4 Matte Black Wedges:
5. Mack Daddy 4 Forged Slate Wedges:
6. Mack Daddy 4 PM Grind Wedges:
For the Mack Daddy PM-Grind Wedge, Phil Mickelson worked directly with Roger Cleveland on the shape and larger groove area so you can take on the toughest short game shots.
Bottom Line
Although we think there are a few too many options that can overwhelm your typically weekend warrior, the Mack Daddy 4 Wedges are as good as it gets. Superior quality and feel leads to better contact and control. The style options are a nice touch for professionals and amateurs alike. They just look right when lining up each shot.
The Mack Daddy 4’s wedges are the best of both worlds. A high performance club that gives amateurs that extra confidence in their wedge play, and a variety of fine tuning options that allow advanced players to pick and choose. Price wise their price tag (Starting at $129.99) is slightly higher than other brands, but you get what you pay for. You really cannot go wrong with the Mack Daddy 4’s!
